Project 3 - Completed

Drawing in 3D

    I'm very pleased with Project 3 and my final video product. I was worried about the outcome of this project when it was first assigned but unexpectedly found a very rewarding and interesting area of 3D printing that I could explore. As noted during peer discussions, if I were to revisit this project I would isolate more variables, and perhaps be more deliberate about what the final object shape would represent. There are also a few things in the video that I would neaten up before adding them to my portfolio, such as font consistency and certain transitions. But overall this project was one of my favorites this semester, and I feel like I've uncovered curiosity about this process that I didn't know I had, so I'm keen to revisit this project eventually. Process shots, printing videos, and prusa slicer screen records are all found in the video.

Project 3 Week 1

3D Printing Design Concepts       This project proved difficult to decide on concepts for because I have no attachment or familiarity with 3D printing. Once we had a demonstration, I recalled one of the artists from my inspiration presentation, Elvira Dayel, describing 3D printing as a medium similar to drawing. Through the demo I could really connect with her describing it that way. Milestone Projects

 Milestone Project Review Architecture Façade     This first assignment is a little funny to look back on, considering all of the new Rhino skills I've gained since then. It is easy to critique it and think of all the different ways I would go about building it now. However, for a first exploration into Rhino software I'm still satisfied with it.    Laser Cut     This laser cut project was one of my favorites projects from this class. I really enjoyed exploring the relationship between "home goods" or sentimental objects and the industrial process of laser cutting and engraving. As well, it was interesting to explore the limitations of machines in our modern society.       If I were to return to this project, I would continue with the theme of chaos vs control, but I would source a laser cutter that could actually complete the cut jobs.  Organic Object Model     This assignment was an interesting take on reverse engineerin...

Weekly Assignment 7

 3D Print Tests     After creating 3 different prototypes in Rhino, two to test planned failures and one to test contour "drawing," I finalized one of the designs and proceeded to print it.   I decided on the cantilever design, due to time constraints I believed it would make for the most interesting visual "failure." slow mo.MOV test print.MOV Next Steps The cantilever test worked as I had hoped, so I will be proceeding with this design. The next step will be to create a more aesthetic "base" for the cantilevers, and then proceed to print. I'm still awaiting confirmation on if I can use all 5 printers at once, but if not then multiple prints on the same printer should still convey the desired message.
